About Gerard Doherty
Gerard
Doherty was born in Belfast Ireland as the youngest of twelve
children. Gerard recalls his interest in art started in primary school
when filling the page with colour started a life long passion for painting.
The opportunity to get involved with art developed in secondary school
art classes when Gerard took a keen interest in pottery and creating
something from clay. “I liked the idea that a piece of clay could
be moulded into something that was considered art” says Gerard.
His clay figures were entered into the local Lurgan Art Show and two
of Gerard’s works were awarded first and second prizes.
As a young adult Gerard left Ireland to travel and then immigrated to Australia in the late 1980’s. As he pursued his career and life in his adopted country, art was rediscovered through his travels across the intriguing and beautiful backdrops of the diverse and light filled Australian sea and landscapes. One of the many things Gerard likes about this country is the abundance of color all wrapped together, from the trickle of water in a rainforest to the heat in the tropics and the snow covered mountains all in the same season. How lucky we are.
